Printing Ranges

Microsoft Word provides the option of printing a portion of a document through the “Print Custom Range” dialogue. This allows the user to specify a range of pages to be printed.

Document Sections

Before printing, determine if the document consists of more than a single section, as the process varies slightly if multiple sections are present.

Viewing Page Numbers and Sections

The Status Bar at the bottom left of the page can be set to display the document page and section numbers. If these numbers are not visible, turn them on by right-clicking on the status bar and choosing them in the menu.

Viewing Section Numbers

Printing a Range – Single Section Document

  • Scroll to the last page of the document and note the section number. If the Section indicates “1”, there is only one section in the document.
  • Choose FILE – PRINT
  • In the Pages box, enter the range of pages you wish to print.
  • Make any other Settings changes (double sided etc.)
  • Click the Print button

Printing a Range – Multi-Section Document

  • Scroll to the last page of the document and note the section number. If the Section indicates a number greater than 1, it is a multi-section document.
    • Printing ranges in a multi-section document requires that the SECTION and PAGE numbers are both indicated.
  • Scroll to the first page to be printed. Note the page and section number.
  • Scroll to the last page to be printed. Note the page and section number.
  • In the Pages box, enter the range of pages you wish to print, following this format:
    • p2-s1-p3-s2

  • Make any other Settings changes (double sided etc.)
  • Click the Print button
