This guide lists Library and Internet resources for researching topics related to human resource management. Research in this area is often interdisciplinary in nature and includes material from a variety of disciplines such as: business, psychology, sociology, law, education, and labor. Researchers should be prepared to use a variety of research tools to find materials relevant to their topics.

TOPCAT

TOPCAT is the library's online catalog. An online catalog stores a record for each item a library owns. Search the online catalog to find out what a library has on a given topic, or to locate a work by title, by author, etc.

Subject Headings

Each item in TOPCAT is assigned one or more special terms, or subject headings that define what the item is about. When you search by subject all items sharing the same subject heading are retrieved. Using subject headings can be a very effective way of finding relevant items. Some useful subject headings are:

NetLibrary is an Internet-based electronic library collection which provides access to the full text of scholarly, reference, and professional books in digital format. eBooks are digitally reproduced in their entirety, including photographs. From off-campus it is necessary to log-in to the NetLibrary using your user name and password. Once you are in NetLibrary, you may 'browse' any title for fifteen minutes. To access e-books, go the library homepage and select Find e-books. Search using any of the subject headings that were used in TOPCAT. Periodicals

You can find additional information on a topic by researching articles in periodicals, e.g. journals, magazines, or newspapers. To find an article use one of the online databases available through the Library homepage.

Select Journals/Magazines

E-journals are an electronic version of a journal that is found and read on the Web. Electronic journals, magazines, and newspapers provide access to current information on various subjects. Rather than browse individual e-journal titles, researchers can more quickly find information on a particular subject by searching a database. If the journal is an e-journal, there will be a link to the full text of the articles. Below is a list of e-journal relating to the topic human resource management.

Business and Company Resource Center
Use this database to research all business and management topics. It includes directory listings for over 300,000 companies as well as company profiles, industry rating, product brands, company performance ratings, investment reporst and ratings, industry overviews, and related associations. You can also find company histories, rankings, and articles along with profile and financial information.
Business Source Elite
In the search box enter terms such as organizational behavior, human capital, employee motivation, or corporate culture. Search terms can also be combined in order to narrow the search results. To search for articles on a company and its human resources practices, enter a company name and a keyword or subject term.
Conference Board Research Collection
Research reports on the latest trends in business practices, including human resource management and compensation. From the drop down menu, select a topic from the list. Relevant topics include: Human Resource Management, Employee Benefits, Compensation, Diversity, etc. Reports are available full text, in pdf.
General Business Files ASAP
Analyze company performance and activity, industry events and trends as well as the latest in management, economics and politics. Access to a combination of broker research reports, trade publications, newspapers, journals and company directory listings with full text and images available.

U. S. National Labor Relations Board

National Compensation Survey
The National Compensation Survey (NCS) provides comprehensive measures of occupational earnings; compensation cost trends, benefit incidence, and detailed plan provisions. Detailed occupational earnings are available for metropolitan and non-metropolitan areas, broad geographic regions, and on a national basis. The index component of the NCS (ECI) measures changes in labor costs. Average hourly employer cost for employee compensation is presented in the ECEC.
