Borrowing from other libraries

Sometimes the CSU library does not have the book or article you need. Do not despair. There are other ways.

Request items from other SWITCH libraries

You have found the item you need in TOPCAT, but a library other than CSU owns it. You can request this item from the other library through TOPCAT.

Recall items from other patrons

You have found the item you need in TOPCAT but another patron has the item checked out. You can have the item recalled by requesting it through TOPCAT.

Check local libraries

If CSU and SWITCH do not own an item or article you need, you may want to check other local libraries. Though you may not be able to search for articles in their electronic databases, you can usually search their online catalogs for books and journal titles. Often you can browse their stacks for print periodicals.

Interlibrary loan (ILL)

If you can not get an item or article from CSU, SWITCH, or other local library, we may be able to obtain the item from other libraries across the country through Interlibrary Loan (ILL). ILL services are available only for current faculty, students, and staff.

What may be requested?

ILL is generally used to obtain books and journal articles. We will try to obtain copies of dissertations, but cannot guarantee their availability.

Only materials NOT found in TOPCAT may be requested. If the item you need is in TOPCAT but at another library or checked out, you can request or recall it through TOPCAT.

How long does it take?
ILL can take 10 to 14 days, sometimes longer.
How much does it cost?

Graduate students are allotted twenty free requests each semester. Undergraduates are allotted five free requests each semester.

Additional ILL requests for books or articles cost $3 each.

If the lender charges more than $10 to fill a request, you will be asked to pay the additional cost over $10; you will be notified of additional charges prior to ordering.

In submitting an ILL request, you are agreeing to these charges -- even if the item is not useful or if you fail to pick it up.

How long can I keep the Interlibrary Loan?

Photocopied journal articles are yours to keep.

Books are generally loaned for a period of 2 to 3 weeks, though lending libraries are free to recall their materials at any time. The due date will be clearly noted on the bookmark that accompanies the book.

Renewals are generally not allowed.

How many requests can I make?
We will try and honor up to 5 requests per person per week. Requests submitted above that number will be processed when workloads permit and may have to wait until the following week to be processed.
How do I know when it has arrived?
If you provide us with your e-mail address, we will notify you via e-mail. If you cannot use e-mail, you will be notified by telephone or mail. E-mail is the preferred mode of communication.
