Locating Items

How do I find an item at the library?
Items at the Stritch library are located either online, in the library building itself, or at one of the other libraries in our consortium (their items can be sent to Stritch). If you still cannot find the item you're looking for in any of these places, you can also request it through our Interlibrary Loan service (we ask libraries outside of our consortium for access to that material for you).
How do I find an item online?
To find articles, use the library's databases. To find ebooks, you can search our ebook collections directly.
How do I find an item in the library building?
  1. Search for the item in the online catalog (TOPCAT).
  2. Note the library location and call number (the combination of letters and numbers that is assigned to that particular item, i.e. PR2807.B617 2004). See Figure 1.
    • Call numbers are read from left to right. Start by finding the letters and then the numbers.
    • Read numbers as whole numbers. 2807 = "Two-thousand eight-hundred seven".
  3. Use the Library Maps and Spaces page to see the locations of the various collections.
    • Collection location and call number ranges are mounted on the ends of each library stack.
TOPCAT - Location Items field
The Location Items field will tell you if an item is loanable and available.

SWITCH Library Consortium

Because we share items with the other libraries in our consortium (SWITCH), the catalog (TOPCAT) will show you results for all of these 8 libraries.
